Jasprit Bumrah Reportedly Rules Himself Out of Contention for Next India Captain

Jasprit Bumrah ICC Rankings

Jasprit Bumrah has stated that he may not participate in all five tests in England to manage his workload, which is why he has ruled himself out of the race for India's Test captaincy.

According to Sky Sports, Shubman Gill and Rishabh Pant are poised to become the captain and vice-captain of India's Test team, respectively, with Bumrah stepping aside from the captaincy conversation.

Rohit Sharma announced his retirement on May 7, leading to speculation that Bumrah might be a strong contender for the full-time captaincy of the Indian team. Other names, including Shubman Gill and Rishabh Pant, were also mentioned. However, recent reports indicate that Shubman Gill is set to be appointed the full-time captain of the Indian Test team, with Rishabh Pant as his deputy.

Jasprit Bumrah Steps Away from Captaincy Talks

Bumrah has previously captained India, notably leading the team in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy in 2025 during Rohit Sharma's absence in the first Test, where India secured a victory. Unfortunately, this was India's only win in the series, as they ultimately lost the trophy to Australia 3-1.

Bumrah missed the last Test of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25 due to a significant injury that required surgery, causing him to miss the Champions Trophy in 2025. He has since returned to the game.

According to Sky Sports, Bumrah's primary concern is his injury management; he believes that taking on the captaincy would add further pressure during the upcoming tour, leading him to rule himself out of contention.
